“Step Up Revolution” is the latest installment in the Step Up dance franchise that gave Channing Tatum his start. This movie is a little different spin on the familiar story. It’s set in Miami and has the group of dancers called the Mob, fighting against land developers who want to demolish their neighborhood for the latest high-rise hotel.
The love story that is a staple of the movies is also there.
Emily (Kathryn McCormick) arrives in Miami with aspirations of becoming a professional dancer and soon falls in love with Sean (Ryan Guzman), a young man who leads a dance crew in elaborate, cutting-edge flash mobs, called “The Mob.” When Emily’s wealthy businessman father (Peter Gallagher) threatens to develop The Mob’s historic neighborhood and displace thousands of people, Emily must band together with Sean and The Mob to turn their performance art into protest art, and risk losing their dreams to fight for a greater cause.
Guzman and McCormick are charming in their debut movie roles, each providing a chemistry that the movie needs to tell the love story portion of the movie.
But the real star of the movie are the dance sequences, each which is more elaborate than the next.
Director Scott Speer and choreographer Jamal Sims, Travis Wall, Chuck Maldonado and Christopher Scott tell the movie’s true story through dance. The predictable ending ( you can all guess what it is) is not a let down.
The 3-D seems to over shadows some of the numbers and didn’t always seem to be necessary. The Mob takes over a Miami museum which is one of the better performances.
All in all “Step Up Revolution” is a feel good movie that makes you want to dance.
