The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards were announced today. For the first time, the nominations were streamed by the academy with various Oscar nominees and winners talking about their excitement of being nominated in between the announcement including winners Jennifer Hudson, Dustin Lance Black and Brie Larson.
The movie everyone is talking about is “La La Land,” which received a record 14 nominations tying with film classics “Titanic” and “All About Eve” for the most in the history of the awards.
Nine movies were nominated for Best Picture, including “La La Land,” “Moonlight” with eight nominations, “Fences” with four nominations, “Hidden Figures” with three nominations and “Arrival.” “Hell or High Water,” “Lion,” “Manchester by the Sea” and “Hacksaw Ridge” were all Best Picture nominees and landed nominations for members of their cast – Jeff Bridges, Dev Patel and Casey Affleck, and Andrew Garfield, respectively.
Meryl Streep received her 20th nomination, this time for “Florence Foster Jenkins.” Also, the Oscar’s diversity problem was vanished this year as a record 6 actors of color were nominated as well as director Barry Jenkins for his movie “Moonlight.”
The awards will be handed out live on Sunday, February 26, at the Dolby Theatre with Jimmy Kimmel serving as host.
