Oscars 2018: ‘The Shape of Water’ wins Best Picture (Complete Winners List)

The 2018 Oscars had a strong message on top of the movies that were being honored tonight. Women and nominees of color made statements with their presentation on stage. Host Jimmy Kimmel set the stage for the night, reminding the in-house audience and the millions watching from home that the #metoo movement was alive.

“The Shape of Water” was seemingly tied with “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” for the most memorable wins. The first award of the night went to Sam Rockwell for best supporting actor for his role in “Three Billboards.” His win all bookended towards the end of the night with a win for his “Billboards” co-star Frances McDormand who won her second Oscar for Best Actress.

McDormand’s speech was one of the best of the night as she used her time on stage to promote gender equality and lift up the women in the room.

“If I may be so honored to have all the female nominees stand with me,” she said. “All the filmmakers, the producers, the writers, the composers,” she continued as more women stood up and applauded her. “Look around … because we all have stories to tell.”

McDormand finished her speech with two words for women in the entertainment business – inclusion rider. An inclusion rider is a clause that an actor can put into their contract that ensures gender and racial equality in hiring on movie sets.

Allison Janney won for her Best Supporting Oscar for “I, Tonya” and Gary Oldman won Best Actor for his role as Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.”
