The Tony Awards, held Sunday night June 10 made a deal with the devil to award “Hadestown” the night’s big winner. The musical won 8 Tony Awards at the 73rd annual ceremony, including Best Musical. The musical also picked up awards in other major categories, including Best Score for Anaïs Mitchell and best direction of a musical for Rachel Chavkin.
The night was hosted by James Corden, who kept the night moving with plenty of audience participation and musical performances, including a “James in the bathroom” sketch with former Tony hosts Sara Baaralieelss, Josh VGrobin and Neil Patrick Harris based on the song by George Salazar in Joe Iconis’ “Be More Chill.”
Oklahoma! won Best Revival of a Musical, with Ali Stroker winning Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical. Her win marks the first time a person who uses a wheelchair has won a Tony Award. The Ferryman won Best Play and The Boys in The Band won Best Revival of a Play.
Stephanie J. Block took home Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in The Cher Show, while Santino Fontana won Best Actor in a Musical for Tootsie.
