TVMusic Network caught up with Gospel great CeCe Winans at last month’s “American Idol” finale ahead of Black Music Month where the 15-time Grammy winner talked about her new live album, “More Than This.” Released in April, Winans feels the energy of the audience is what makes the record special.
“I love the album. It’s a live record,” Winans said. “The audience to me, makes it…it knocks it out the park. They’re singing and worshiping. We cover great songs. I just think people are going to love it. The album was recorded in Nashville, and we invited worship teams from all over to sing in the audience and it was just heavenly. More than this is out now and I’m excited.”
Winans has some upcoming concert dates where music lovers will see the album is true to her shows. But when asked what she loves and doesn’t love about touring Winans admits that even though she loves her audiences, sometimes it’s hard to be away from home.
“I’m turning 60 this year [on October 8],” she said. “I like being at home. I’m a grandma now. I want to be with my babies. But it’s the people [in the audience]. I love the people. I love praising God with people. So, when you go out on tour you get to see then singing your songs, you see the generations, you see the babies, you see grandmas, you see the power of gospel music and how powerful it is when we come together. Even though I might hit the stage tired, I never leave tired. I am just energized by the spirit of God and that’s what I look forward to, going and seeing people’s faces and seeing the power of the gospel.”
With more than 40 years in the business, Winans knows the ups and downs of the music business, so she has sound advice for any music hopefuls.
“You have to keep God first because…you get your value from him and not from being on the charts. Sometimes you are going to be on the charts and sometimes you are not so your value can’t be in that. You have to know who you are and if you know who you are then you can go through the ups and downs but yet stay level. So that’s what I would tell them, Keep God first.”
