From TVOne comes a live version of Sonya Curry‘s podcast “Raising Fame, ” called “Raising Fame,” premiering Sunday, July 7 at 10P/9C. Hosted by celebrity moms Lucille O’Neal (mom of Shaquille O’Neal) and Sonya Curry (mom of Stephen, Seth, and Sydel Curry), the series provides an intimate look into the lives of some of today’s biggest stars, told by the people who raised them. The series is based on the popular podcast of the same name where she interviews the parents of superstars in all types of entertainment.
For Curry, working with O’Neill made her realize the two mothers have a lot in common. She told TVMusic Network that they shared the closest philosophy to hers on raising a prodigy or talented child. “When we were doing the podcast, [Lucille] was one of our first guests on the show. I remember going into her home … and everything was the same,” Curry said. “The beliefs that she was instilling in her children including Shaq. The perspective by which she continued to parent him was 1. God first Family second, and then everything after that but also the encouragement of whatever he wanted to be she would always be there to support him in it. She always wanted to make sure he understood more than just about where he was going but also about who he represented and again God and his family and then also just keeping it real. ‘I also want you to be a good human being.’ We share those principles together.”
She also says the show will have real conversations about family and will also give a look at Black culture. “That’s what we want to do with our show, build a community to encourage other parents,” Curry continued. “There’s no instruction book on raising children period and there is definitely no instruction book on raising celebrities and icons at all but why reinvent the wheel. it about the transfer of information…It takes a village to raise children. It’s about sharing information, being authentic. being real and that’s what we’re about. We are not about mincing words. TV One is allowing us the platform to be genuine, to be authentic, to be real.”
This season also includes an impressive lineup of award-winning athletes, musicians, actors, and their families including Usher, Shaquille O’Neal, John Legend, Fantasia, Magic Johnson, Jon Batiste, Chance the Rapper, Kevin Durant, Billy Porter, the late Chadwick Boseman and more.
