Kaitlin Olson has another hit on her hands. From her Emmy-nominated role on the hit series “Hacks” to the long running “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” the actress has been a staple on television screens for years.
Now comes a vehicle of Olson to shine all on her own in the new ABC procedural drama “High Potential” premiering on Tuesday, September 17 after “Dancing with the Stars” on ABC. Olson plays a single mom with exceptional mind who joins the LAPD in an unlikely partnership as a consultant for its Major Crimes Unit.
If teenage detective “Veronica Mars” was all grown up one could imagine this being her life with a mix of Erin Brockovich thrown in.
In the pilot episode we see Morgan in her daily routine. She’s a cleaning lady, picking up for the officers at LAPD after hours, dancing care-freely. As she accidentally drops a bunch off case files, she realizes something’s not right with the clues. Moving onto the crime board that the officers use to work through current cases. Looking at the board, Morgan identifies the suspect as the victim, sending the officers into a fit the next morning. When she is called the police station for a meeting and asked by the captain to work on the case with the head detective, he reluctantly agrees.
What transpires is a working relationship like a buddy cop, there are meet-cute moments like a rom-com and a what to watch. Comparisons to “Moonlighting’s Dave and Maddie, Remington Steele’s Remington and Laura Holt or even Scully and Mulder from “The X Files,” are eminent. It will be fun to take the ride and see where the relationship goes.
The supporting cast is strong. Judy Reyes plays the chief forcing the partnership, Javicia Leslie, who had a starring turn in CW’s “Batgirl,” and Deniz Akdeniz as Oz. Morgan’s partner is Karadec, played by Daniel Sunjata.
Morgan’s home life includes 3 adorable kids, a 15-year-old teen looking for her own identity as she thinks her dad ran out on them when she was a baby (he didn’t), a pre-teen who inherited Morgan’s gift, and a toddler who she brings with her to crime scenes.
“High Potential” is a must see for the cast chemistry, the humor, the cases are interesting, and Morgan is delightful. The Morgan/Karadec relationship is one to watch.
“High Potential” stars Kaitlin Olson as Morgan, Daniel Sunjata as Karadec, Javicia Leslie as Daphne, Deniz Akdeniz as Lev “Oz” Ozdil, Amirah J as Ava, Matthew Lamb as Elliot and Judy Reyes as Selena. Taran Killam guest stars.
“High Potential” airs Tuesdays, beginning September 19 on ABC.
