The Writers Guild of America Awards celebrated critically acclaimed “Up in the Air” and “The Hurt Locker” for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay respectively.
Mark Boal is the writer of “The Hurt Locker” and Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner wrote “Up In The Air” based on the novel by Walter Kirn.
Both films are front runners in all major categories for next months Academy Awards.
“Hurt Locker” is one of the top contenders for Best Picture at this years Oscars with a total of nine nominations, tying for the most of any film this year. Director Kathryn Bigelow just won the DGA award for best Director. The film tells the story of a journalists time during the Iraq War.
“Up in the Air” has been a highly celebrated film this awards season as well, with Academy Award nomination including acting nods for George Clooney, Vera Fermega, and Anna Kendrick and best directing for co-writer Jason Reitman.
Honorary awards were bestowed were given to Barry Levinson (“Avalon”),Larry David (“Seinfeld,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm”), Stan Berkowitz (“Justice League”), Anthony Peckham (“Invictus,” “Sherlock Holmes”) and Carl Gottlieb (“Jaws”.)
The awards season caps with the Academy Awards, hosted by Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, will be held on Sunday, March 7 on ABC.
