BET Awards 2011: Chris Brown big winner last night, nabs controversial Viewer's Choice Vote

The 2011 BET Awards were held last night in Los Angeles. The three-hour program was filled with many show stopping performances from such artists as Alicia Keys, Patti La Belle, Shirley Caesar, The Five Heartbeats,Little Wayne and more. The show seemed to offer something for everybody as viewers enjoyed performance from new and old as well as every genre of music including the jazzy sounds ofAnita Baker and the old school hit of Cherelle and Alexander O’Neal.

The show was rich with comedy from comedian and host Kevin Hart, who told the crowd that “no one was safe” as he ribbed them one by one, including Sean (Diddy, Puffy, Swag) Combs who was told to loose the nicknames. Some of Hart’s best material came from a taped piece shown throughout the night entitled “Hollywood Husbands.” The sketch was a spoof of such shows as “Basketball Wives” and “The Real Housewives” as Hart surrounded by such famous Hollywood husbands as Nelly, Nick Cannon, Jermaine Dupri, Bobby Brown and Anthony Anderson reflected on life. The sketches seemed to get the most laughs.

Chris Brown was the big winner of the night with four awards, including best male R&B artist, Viewer’s Choice, Best Collaboration and Video of the Year for his song “Look At Me Now” with Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes. The Viewers Choice Announcement had a bit of a mix up and caused an awkward moment when Brown’s named was read as the winner, then “corrected” to Rihanna as Drake showed up on stage to give a thank you speech. Hart announced that Brown was the actual winner at the close of the show.

Patti LaBelle, who was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, performed a couple of classics, including “Lady Marmalade.”

Steve Harvey was honored with the Humanitarian Award and was recognized for his work as a comedian, best selling author, funny man and radio personality.

Beyonce wrapped up the night with a performance from the Glastonbury Music Festival in England.

The show cleverly used the show as a platform to promote its new series and current programming by having those artists as presenters and announcers. The show didn’t feel like a three-hour long informerical, the way The Daytime Emmys did just the week before when it aired on CBS.
