It was the last the first night that the audience had their say on “So You Think You Can Dance.” For the first time since the season began, the audience voted on which dancers would stay and which dancers would go home. The task had previously been up to judges Nigel Litythgoe, Mary Murphy and the revolving guest judge (Christina Applegate, among others to pick from a bottom three vote-getters of the previous week.
“It’s a relief to not have that pressure,” Murphy said backstage after the show. “Now people can stop bothering me on Twitter about the vote.
The dancers had to perform four numbers, including a solo piece, a group number and pairs with their co-stars and with the all-stars, including perenial favorite Twitch, former champs Melanie Moore and Benji Schwimmer, hip hop dancer Comfort, contemporary dancer Marko Germar and contemporary dancer and the star of this summer’s dance movie, “Step Up: Revolution,” Kathryn McCormick.
Of the parings, Chehon and Witney did a cha-cha that seemed to get the better of Chehon who seemed to struggle with the lifts and the physicality of the dance.
Cole and Eliana did a very physical contemporary number choreographed by Mia Michaels. The piece got a standing ovation from the audience and the judges. “Eliana, there’s like light coming out of your feet. You’re the perfect dancer,” Applegate said during her critique of the dance. “I could see that resistance in that pain from both of you.”
Cyrus and Tiffany were teenagers making out while their parents were away for the evening in a cute, well danced Broadway number. The piece was well acted and believable.
The results of the night were Witney and Cole sent home, leaving Tiffany, Eliana, Chehon and Cyrus to dance up to six numbers in the performance finale Tuesday, September 11th. The four can breath easy for that night’s performances as there will not be an elimination that night. The finale show on Tuesday, September 18th, is when the top girl and the top boy will be named “America’s Favorite Female Dancer and America’s Favorite Male Dancer.
“So You Think You Can Dance” airs Tuesdays on FOX.
