Interview: a minute with ‘This Is Us’ star Justin Hartley

This week “This Is Us” is all new airing Tuesday, February 14 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

In the episode entitled “Jack Person’s Son,” Kevin (Justin Hartley) stresses about the premiere of his play and he receives support from an unexpected source. Randall (Sterling K. Brown) struggles under the pressure of both his work and ailing father.

Also, Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) Valentine’s Day doesn’t go as planned. Toby (Chris Sullivan) and Kate (Chrissy Metz) decide to dig deep and get to know each other’s biggest secrets.

TVMusic Network, caught up with Hartley to discuss the success of the show, which was recently renewed for seasons 2 and 3.

Check out the interview below:

Phyllis: You are on the show that everyone is talking about.  I know you are good at keeping secrets but this one was so buzzed about. How were you able to keep the show’s secrets? Especially about what happened with Toby on Christmas Eve?

Justin Hartley: What’s interesting is, it very easy to keep a secret. People watch the show on Tuesday and then spend the rest of the week talking about what they just watched. So they don’t ask you about what’s coming up. The Toby spoiler was a little different because there were five weeks in between. People spent a week talking about that show and they sort of wanted to know what happens next [with Toby]. Then there was two weeks of hiatus and when everyone came back, people were wanting to know about that show [with Toby]. You’ve got to make sure you don’t say the wrong thing but typically it’s easy because people just talk about the show that they just watched, rather than asking me what’s next.

Phyllis: Congratulations on the renewal for “This Is Us.” You have two seasons at once. That’s a rare thing in TV these days. What was your reaction to the news? I know you were all together when you found out.

Justin Hartley: It was great. Anytime you can get a show on the air is great. If you get people to watch it and for it to be critically acclaimed and then to get it renewed is a feat in itself and then two seasons, I didn’t expect that. That’s a real big vote of confidence from the network and the studio. It’s a credit to our crew, the cast and our writers, it feels really good.

Phyllis: Now to turn it around a bit, do you have a favorite band or show?

Justin Hartley: My favorite band right now, who would that be? I like so many things. My favorite band right now… well, I’m listening to The Hamilton mixtape.

Phyllis: If you could get away for a few days where no one knows you, you wouldn’t have to answer questions or take any selfies, where would you go?

Justin Hartley: But then everybody would know I was there if I answer that question. The moon. No, I don’t mind it. I like it here. I like LA. I like all these people. I like the people work with. I like everybody. I wouldn’t get away. I’m enjoying the moment. I would stay right here.

This Is Us” airs Tuesdays on NBC.
