Janey Varney as Becca on FX’s “You’re the Worst”

Janet Varney is one busy woman. Her name might not be one you recognize right away but you’ve heard her voice and have seen her on the big and small screens over the years.
The comedian, actor, writer and producer voiced “Korra” on Nickelodeon’s “The Legend of Korra” and she can currently be seen as “Becca” on the FX series, “You’re the Worst.”
TVMusic Network put Varney through our Actor’s Spotlight and here is what she had to say about a number of her favorite things, including wanting to play “Sherlock?” Check out the exchange below:
TVMusic Network: Can you preview your roles on “You’re the Worst” for us?
Janet Varney: This season of “You’re the Worst” is incredibly rich with just another delicious series of helpings of dysfunction, heartbreak, and dare I say hope? I’m so, so excited about it. I’m just in awe of those writers and that cast. And, of course, playing Becca, who arguably may BE the worst in terms of redemptive qualities, is a total blast.
TVMusic Network: And you’re on “Stan Against Evil…”
Janet Varney: I’m…crazy excited about Season 2 of “Stan Against Evil.” The plot has definitely thickened in terms of the overarching bigger story and relationships of the show, but of course, there’s also more than enough utter silliness, insanely fun monsters and some genuine chills!
TVMusic Network: Who most influenced your decision to become an actor?
Janet Varney: Well, this is kind of a gross answer, but I don’t really feel like I ever totally “decided” to become one. I was so reluctant to move to LA when I started getting work, I really kind of fought it for awhile. And then I just sort of succumbed. And then 12 years passed!! But as far as influence goes, I would definitely cite my dad, who’s a tremendously entertaining human being (while not an actor per se), the Muppets, and Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin in “All of Me.”
TVMusic Network: What is your favorite movie of all time?
Janet Varney: For reasons, I won’t bore you with, that answer is probably the original “Tron.”
TVMusic Network: What is the best concert you ever attended?
Janet Varney: Oh man- that’s a tough one! I’ve been to some real doozies (note to self: probably don’t ever need to use the word “doozies” again) and for different styles/types of experiences, you know? It’s hard to compare, for example, the Holiday Organ Spectacular (look, pipe organs sound neat, ok???) with The National at the Hollywood Bowl…
TVMusic Network: What is your favorite vacation spot?
Janet Varney: I sure love New Zealand!
TVMusic Network: Is there an actor you looked up to or studied to make your craft better?
Janet Varney: Emma Thompson for her vulnerability, humor, and somehow being a goof and a perfect lady simultaneously.
TVMusic Network: Is there a role on television or movie that you wish you could play?
Janet Varney: I mean, if someone FORCED me to play Sherlock, I would have a hard time saying no.
TVMusic Network: What is your favorite thing to do when not working?
Janet Varney: Ideally probably being outside somewhere, STRONGLY PREFER FOG OR CLOUDS and cool temps!
TVMusic Network: Is there one thing on your bucket list that you’d still like to do?
Janet Varney: Tons! For one thing, having just experienced the total solar eclipse from Wyoming, I’m quite keen to go to Argentina for the total eclipse in 2019.
TVMusic Network: What is a store that you could browse in for hours?
Janet Varney: A great vintage store. That’s probably a trite answer, but where else can you find one-of-a-kind, special things that have a history, are easier on the eco-footprint of consumerism AND often come with their own bewitching mildew smell?
TVMusic Network: As an actor, you must travel a lot. How do you pass the time when flying?
Janet Varney: Depends on how tired I am. If I’m rested, I often get a wave of excitement to get a bunch of work done on a plane- like screenwriting or responding to emails. If I’m tired, it’s usually straight to the audio book played while simultaneously playing Lumosity games (I can’t speak to whether they’ve made me in any way smarter, but damn they’re cute) on my iPad.
