Regina King and Colman Domingo in a scene from “If Beale Street Could Talk.” |
On the day before The Oscars, Aubrey Plaza hosted the 2019 Film Independent Spirit Award, which is often known as the alternative Oscars. Presented on the beach in Santa Monica, the affair is casual, unconventional and a relaxing time for artists after a stress-filled Oscar season of campaigning for the coveted award.
“If Beale Street Could Talk” took Best Feature, and the movie’s director Barry Jenkins won Best Director. The “First Feature” Award went to Boots Riley for “Sorry to Bother You.” Glenn Close and Richard E. Grant took home prizes for “The Wife” and “Can You Ever Forgive Me”.
