Songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez are no strangers to the Oscars at the Academy Awards. The pair have earned two Oscars to their name, for “Remember Me” from Coco and for “Frozen’s” anthem “Let It Go.” Now they are nominated for Best Original Song for writing “Into the Unknown” from “Frozen II.”
The song, sung by Idina Menzel as Elsa, follows the character’s journey. In the movie, Elsa the Snow Queen has an extraordinary gift — the power to create ice and snow. But no matter how happy she is to be surrounded by the people of Arendelle, Elsa finds herself strangely unsettled. After hearing a mysterious voice call out to her, Elsa travels to the enchanted forests and dark seas beyond her kingdom — an adventure that soon turns into a journey of self-discovery.
The couple recently joined fellow Original Song nominees, Dianne Warren, Songwriter of “I’m Standing With You” from the film Breakthrough; Bernie Taupin, songwriter (co-writer with Elton John) of “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from the Elton John biopic “Rocketman,” and Cynthia Erivo and Joshuah Campbell (VIA SKYPE), songwriters of “Stand Up” from the film Harriet for a Q & A moderated by Variety’s Jon Burlingame with Oscar-winning songwriter and ASCAP President Paul Williams to discuss songwriting.
