Soul Train Awards Performance: Teddy Riley’s Tribute Performance Went Off With A Bang Teddy Riley – Superstar producer Teddy Riley was honored at The Soul Train Awards with the Legend Award for his remarkable body of work.
“Everyone says it’s well deserved and overdue,” Riley said when accepting his award. “I agree but it is not overdue. It comes when God gives it to you when you’re ready.”
The mega producer thanked legendary singer Gladys Knight for “lifting him up.” Riley also thanked BET president, Debra Lee and “Soul Train” creator Don Cornelius for the show which home to his first performance. Riley is currently touring with Guy and he hopes to add New Edition to the bill in the new year.
After a sizzle reel of Riley’s accomplishments as a performer, songwriter and producer Riley hit the stage to perform a medley of hits hits including When it came time to honors Riley’s work with Michael Jackson, Michael’s brother Tito picked up his guitar to accompany Riley for a rendition of “Remember the Time,” one of Riley’s biggest hits with from Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous” album. Riley and Michael worked on a number of projects, including the “Dangerous” album. Also joining Riley on stage was Bobby Brown, “(My Prerogative)” V. Bozeman, Dougie E. Fresh, (“Showstopper,”) and Wreckx-N-Effect (“Rump Shaker,”).
After the show, Riley talked about what he likes most about performing. “It’s when [Damien Hall and Aaron Hall and I are all together performing as Guy],” Riley said. “When we can get together and dance together. Sing the words and even more, we love it when [the fans] sing the words. The show was hosted by Erykah Badu.
