“Once Upon A Time” is further establishing its Disney roots with tonight’s musical episode entitled “The Song in Your Heart.” The show’s executive producers hooked up with composers Alan Zachary, Michael Weiner, and OUAT composer Mark Isham for seven original songs that fit in nicely with the Storybrooke theme.
In flashback, Snow and Charming make a special wish that Emma will be protected. The result of their wish has the whole kingdom bursting into song, which infuriates the Evil Queen. Meanwhile, in Storybrooke, the Black Fairy announces her plans to unleash another curse on the town while Emma and Hook prepare for their wedding.
Viewers can expect songs from their favorite characters, something that they have wanted for a long time.
“What is great about the musical [episode] is it’s not a stand-alone episode where it’s removed from everything else,” said Rebecca Mader, who plays Zelena the Wicked Queen. “It is actually part of the story of a part of [the show] coming up to the final battle at the end of season six. It’s …nothing that doesn’t make sense. It’s continuing the story except we’re put under this curse where we can’t stop singing. Which happens to me in real life, so it is totally normal.”
Mader, who describes her solo song as “wicked,” says that the episode is in the vein of other Disney musicals.
“It’s Disney,” she adds. “When you watch a Disney cartoon or musical where sudden;y everyone breaks out into song and off you go. That’s what this episode is. It’s like a little mini Disney movie. I think the fans will have fun with the songs.”
The episode airs Sunday, May 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC. The soundtrack is available to purchase now on iTunes.
