Tonight’s “American Idol” show will be a homecoming of sorts when original Idol judge Paula Abdul returns to the judges chairs temporarlliy replacing Luke Bryan who has been stricken with COVID-19 and unable to appear on the show which selects the Top Ten contestants this week.

Luke will be missed at our first American Idol LIVE show tonight, but he is resting now in quarantine at home and we’re wishing him a speedy recovery.
For the first time since airing on ABC, Paula Abdul is set to return as a guest judge on tonight’s first live episode of American Idol airing 8:00-10:00 p.m. EST on ABC.

Paula will be stepping in for Luke Bryan and will join Lionel Richie and Katy Perry at the judge’s desk as “American Idol” gets closer to crowning a new winner.

Following America’s overnight vote, 10 contestants will be revealed from the top 16, leaving six contestants to perform for a chance at one of two spots picked by the judges, rounding out the top 12.

Production is following strict, rigorous, COVID guidelines and we are all being tested often in accordance with those guidelines. Shooting a show during a pandemic constantly presents new challenges, but we are blessed to have the best crew in the business.

Bryan took to social media to make the announcement.

American Idol” airs Sundays and Mondays on ABC.
