TVMusic Network remembers Irene Cara. Oscar-winning actress and singer Irene Cara, who starred in and sang the title songs from iconic movies “Fame” and “Flashdance,” has died. She was 63. The announcement was made by her publicist on Cara’s social media account.
Later, Cara won the Oscar for best original song for “Flashdance … What a Feeling,” along with the songwriting team of Flashdance (1983) — music by Giorgio Moroder, lyrics by Keith Forsey and Cara — for which she sang the iconic title song.
One of her most memorable roles was of the young ambitious songstress “Sparkle’ in the movie of the same name. The 1976 musical/drama tells the story of sisters, Sparkle (Irene Cara), Sister (Lonette McKee), and Dolores (Dwan Smith) who form a singing group and become a sensation at a local nightclub.
