The 2023 Oscars were held in Hollywood at the Dolby Theater at the Ovation at Hollywood and Highland. As expected, the night’s leader “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” was the evening’s big winner, taking home a total of seven Oscars, including Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Original Screenplay, Director, Editing and Best Picture.
The movie’s Ke Huy Quan took home the Oscar for Outstanding Supporting Actor. In his acceptance speech, Quan thanked his mother and his fellow crew and castmates.
“Thank you. My mom is 84 years old. She is at home watching. Mom, I just won an Oscar. My journey started on a boat. I spent year in a refugee camp. And somehow I ended up here on Hollywood’s biggest stage. They say, “Stories like this only happen in the movies.” I cannot believe it’s happening to me. This… this is the American dream. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. Thank you so much today to the Academy for this honor of a lifetime.”

In the costume category, Ruth Carter took home her second Oscar for her work in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” She won previously for “Black Panther.” With tonight’s win, Carter became the first Black woman to win two Oscars.
“Wow. Nice. Nice to see you again,” Carter said when greeting her statue once on stage. She continued in her speech. “Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the superhero that is a black woman. She endures. She loves. She overcomes. She is every woman in this film. She is my mother. This past week Mabel Carter became an ancestor. This film prepared me for the moment. Chadwick [Boseman], please take care of Mom. Ryan Coogler, Meg Moore, thank you both for your vision. Together we are reshaping how culture is represented. The Marvel family, Kevin Feige, Victoria Alonzo, Louis D’Esposito, and their arsenal of genius. Thank you. I share this with many dedicated artists whose hands and hearts helped manifest the costumes of Wakanda and Talokan. This is for my mother. She was 101.”
During a backstage interview, Carter talked about the differences she took between the two films and how it was working on a sequel.
“…The first film we were introduced to Queen Ramonda as the queen, as the support to T’Chala,” Carter said. “In WAKANDA FOREVER, we’re introduced to her as the ruler of Wakanda. So we stepped up. We ‑‑ we enhanced ‑‑ Angela always wanted to play a queen. And so, to amplify her as the ruler of Wakanda, we added vibranium, more vibranium. We added an extra element to her isicholo, the married woman’s crown that she wears. We gave her the royal color of purple and adorned in gold as she enters the UN in this gown and it was incredible to elevate Queen Ramonda to this new status. And so, the process was to give her strength and show also the ‑‑ the way that she embodied her place in Wakanda. As you can see in the film when she sits on the thrown, she’s in a gray, one‑shoulder dress. And the one ‑‑ the exposed shoulder shows her strength because, you know, Angela, she got those guns, right? So, we exposed her arms. We exposed her arms at the ‑‑ in the UN to show, you know, how beautiful women can be, how strong and vulnerable at the same time, but also can lead a nation.”
