For Carrie Underwood, tonight’s songs took her down memory lane. The judge sang the same songs when she was a contestant. She sang Donna Summer’s “MacArthur Park” and Rolling Stones “A Piece of My Heart” sung tonight by Rae and Kyndal respectively.
“I don’t think I got great comments after “MacArthur Park, ” Underwood told TVMusic Network and a small group of reporters after the show. “..and I got reamed with a “A Piece of My Heart.”
The Grammy winner admitted the song was cool but at the time she didn’t know what the lyrics to “MacArthur Park” meant.
“No. I have no idea [what they mean]. They were like ‘what does it mean’, Underwood said. “It sounded cool so I started singing. But as a mom, if my kids had left a cake in the rain.”
Ultimately Philmon and Rae and were sent home.

“I was talking to Luke [Bryan] and Lionel [Richie] about [Rae going home]. It seems the person who gets saved is the next to go. She got saved last week. So it’s kind like America. The same thing happened last year.”
When asked why she thought that was the case, Underwood was surprised.
“You don’t know what is resonating with people, the ones sitting at home watching and voting. It’s the same. It’s just the music business in general. I’ve seen so many singers and songwriters that were trying to be artists as well. You think, why are you not super-famous. For what ever reason the disconnect, people are so talented.”
For Knydal, who had the choice between The Police song “Message in a Bottle” and the often sung “A Piece of My Heart,” she picked the latter which Underwood understood.
“It’s a good song. It’s a great vibe. The melody’s insane.
Next week is Disney Night when “American Idol” airs live on Monday, April 20, 2026 on ABC with mentor, judge and Idol alum Jennifer Hudson.
