Viola Davis is an EGOT winner. The celebrated actress reached the rare honor with her Grammy win for the audiobook of her memoir “Finding Me.” The memior was up against heavyweights as Questlove, Jamie Foxx, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Mel Brooks.
Davis has two Tony Awards for “King Hedley II” and the Broadway revival of “Fences,” a Primetime Emmy for “How to Get Away With Murder” and an Oscar for the 2016 film “Fences.”
Davis joins actors and academy members Rita Moreno, Alan Menken, Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Legend, Mike Nichols, Mel Brooks, Jennifer Hudson and Whoopi Goldberg to become the 18th person to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award, known as the EGOT.
In her acceptance speech, Davis thanked her family, husband Julius Tennon and daughter Genesis, sighting that she wrote for her six year old self.
“I wrote this book to honor the six ear old Viola. To honor her, her life, her joy, her trauma, everything… ad its been such a journey. I just EGOT!”
This is a busy awards season for Davis who is receieving recognition for her role in “The Woman King.” She is currently nominated for a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild and Entertainment Of the Year at the NAACP Image Awards.
