Singer Teddy Pendergrass has passed away at the age of 59 in a Philadelphia hospital, reports the Associated Press.

According to his son, Teddy Pendergrass II, his father had colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had a had a difficult time recovering.

Pendergrass first rose to fame in the 1970s when he became lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. The group is known for hits such as “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” ” Bad Luck” and “Wake Up Everybody”.

After leaving the Blue Notes for a solo career, he became an international star with hits ” “Close The Door,” “Turn Off The Lights” and “Love TKO.”

Pendergrass was at the height of his career in 1982 when he was paralyzed in a car accident that permanently injured his spine. He continued to record the album “Love Language” and made a comeback appearance at the 1985 Live Aid concert when he performed from his wheelchair.

He won a Grammy Award in 1989 for his song “Joy”. He continued recording music through out the 80s and 90s. He also starred with Stephaine Mills in the touring production of “Your Arms To Short To Box With God”. Pendergrass released his autobiography entitled, “Truly Blessed” in 1998.

In 2006, Pendergrass announced his retirement from the music business but has participated in “Teddy 25: A Celebration of Life, Hope & Possibilities”, a 25th anniversary awards ceremony in 2007 to raise money for his charity, The Teddy Pendergrass Alliance.
