Book Spotlight: Girl Scouts history book –'Tough Cookies' celebrates 100 years of Girls Scouts

The Girls Scouts CEO, Kathy Cloniger has written a new book about the organization entitled, “Tough Cookies: Leadership Lessons from 100 Years of the Girl Scouts (Wiley; 9781118000045; $24.95; October 2011; Hardcover & E-Book).

The book tells of the organization’s devotion to developing the leadership in girls and how it grew from 18 girls to over 50 women in the past 100 years.

The 100th Anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the USA is coming up in March of next year and will feature the theme “The Year of The Girl.”

Known to today’s generation as the maker of their famous cookies, the book shows the origins of the organization. It addresses one of our nation’s most underused resources: Girls, and the women they ultimately can become.

Under Cloninger’s leadership, Girl Scouts has completed a nationwide merger of local affiliates. This restructuring effort, virtually unprecedented in the nonprofit sector, has greatly enhanced the organization’s ability to deliver programs and services to girls.
