‘The Odd Couple’ features all-star cameos in special tribute to Garry Marshall

This week’s “The Odd Couple” episode paid a touching tribute to Garry Marshall, the shows executive producer. Marshall’s long history of television comedy credits include “Happy Days,” “Laverne & Shirley” and “Mork and Mindy” to name a few.

The special episode entitled, “Taffy Days,” included stars from Marshall’s iconic sitcoms – Ron Howard, Marion Ross, Anson Williams and Don Most from “Happy Days,” Pam Dawber from “Mork & Mindy,” and from “Laverne & Shirley,” cast members Cindy Williams and Garry’s sister Penny Marshall.

The episode started with the current “The Odd Couple” cast led by Matthew Perry (Oscar) and Thomas Lennon (Felix) after Oscar’s father,Walter’s, (Garry Marshall) funeral. Walter’s will read by his lawyer, played by Howard, sends Oscar and Felix on a pilgrimage to Oscar’s hometown to spread his father’s ashes in the river behind the candy factory he owned. Along the way they meet the other sitcom stars characters leading up to Walter’s estranged business partner, Patty, played by Garry’s sister Penny.

“Happy Days” ran on ABC from 1974 to 1984 and also starred Tom Bosley and Henry Winkler. It generated the spin-off hit shows “Laverne & Shirley” which ran from 1976 to 1983 and “Mork & Mindy” which ran from 1978 to 1982.

The slate at the end of the episode dedicate to Garry Marshall featured a picture of Marshall with the original television Oscar and Felix, Jack Klugman and Tony Randall during the shows production.

The original “The Odd Couple” starred Randall and Klugman and ran from 1970 to 1975.
