The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards air Sunday, September 17 on CBS at 5:00 p.m. ET/PT.
The most interesting thing about this year’s Emmys is the lack of nominations for HBO’s super series, “Game of Thrones.” The drama was not eligible to enter this year. The leading cable network still dominated the noms this season thanks to its freshman drama “Westworld.” The show ties veteran NBC late-night series, “Saturday Night Live” with 22 nominations each, the most of any series this year.
Other series with multiple nominations include FX’s “Feud: Bette and Joan,” and “Stranger Things” on Netflix each with 18 a piece and the five-time Outstanding Comedy Series winner “Veep” that was 17 nominations.
In the acting fields, the races are tight and co-stars are pitted against each other in some of the major categories.
“This Is Us” co-stars Milo Ventimiglia and Sterling K. Brown are both nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Other competing co-stars include: “Grace and Frankie” co-stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, the SNL ladies, Vanessa Bayer, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, Kathryn Hahn against Judith Light for “Transparent” and Tony Hale and Matt Walsh for “Veep.”
The trend of Oscar winners vying for Emmys continues as the Outstanding Actress in a TV Movie orLimited Series Actress has Jessica Lange, Susan Sarandon, Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman each looking to add another accolade to their trophy cases. Lange and Sarandon, for their roles as dueling divas on “Feud: Bette and Joan” and Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon for their roles as housewives and best friends on “Big Little Lies.”
The night’s host Stephen Colbert will no doubt get political. The Emmy nominated host found his stride this season giving his analysis on the election and the Trump Administration on his Emmy nominated “The Late Show” with Stephen Colbert. Should Colbert win tonight, he will make Emmy history as the first host to win and host at the same time. Colbert and his show are nominated for a total of six awards, including Outstanding Direction and Outstanding Writing for a variety series, as well as variety series overall, and Colbert’s election-night special, which aired on Showtime, earned nods in the same categories for Outstanding Variety Special.
