‘American Idol’: what to expect from Sunday Night’s Top 3 performance show

Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Maddie Poppe and Gabby Barrett will complete for The American Idol title.

American Idol final performance show will take place on Sunday, May 20. In this episode, the Top 3 finalists Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Gabby Barrett and Maddie Poppe will be shown in footage from their weekend return visits to their hometowns – Dallas, Georgia; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Clarksville, Iowa, respectively – to say thank you to all of their supportive fans back home with performances and enjoy the day with their family and friends.

Nationally syndicated host of iHeartMedia’s “The Bobby Bones Show” Bobby Bones will return to “American Idol” to mentor the Top 3 as they enter their final week of the competition.

Back on the Idol stage, the Top 3 finalists will perform three songs: a hometown dedication, a repeat of their favorite song of the season and their winner’s single. In addition to performances by Caleb, Gabby, and Maddie, four past contestants – Jonny Brenns, Catie Turner, Michelle Sussett and Harper Grace will also come back to “American Idol” to perform an original song medley.

The Top 3 finalists and their song choices for this week include:

Hometown: “Folsom Prison Blues” by Johnny Cash

Repeat: “Don’t Close Your Eyes” by Keith Whitley

Winner’s Single: “Johnny Cash Heart” (Original)

Gabby Barrett

Hometown: “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey

Repeat: “Little Red Wagon” by Miranda Lambert

Winner’s Single: “Rivers Deep” (Original)

Maddie Poppe

Hometown: “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac

Repeat: “Don’t Ever Let Your Children Grow Up” (Original)

Winner’s Single: “Going Going Gone” (Original)

America will vote overnight on Sunday, May 20, to determine who will be crowned the next “American Idol” during the grand finale on Monday, May 21. Voting for the finale will open for the Top 3 contestants when the show goes live on Sunday, May 20, at 8:00 p.m. EDT and will remain open overnight, closing at 9:00 a.m. EDT on Monday, May 21. You can vote online at AmericanIdol.com/vote, in the American Idol app or via text. You can vote 10 times per contestant, per method.

Helping America determine who will become the next singing sensation are music industry forces and superstar judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, with Emmy® Award-winning Ryan Seacrest returning as host.

The official “American Idol” app is available on iOS and Android devices. Using the app, fans can vote for their favorite contestants, as well as on AmericanIdol.com/vote or via text. Fans can also use the app to “IDOLize” their selfies with “American Idol” filters and stickers, and track what’s trending with judges, contestants and fans.
