As much as we love movie superheroes, it’s the real-life heroes that deserve recognition. That’s the message that “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman delivered at tonight’s MTV Movie and TV Awards. After winning the Best Hero Award at the #MTVAwards for his role in the Marvel blockbuster, Boseman called up James Shaw Jr., a real-life hero, and handed over the award to him to honor Shaw for saving lives by disarming the gunman who opened fire in a Waffle House earlier this year.

“Receiving an award for playing a superhero is amazing, but it’s even greater to acknowledge the heroes that we have in real life. I wanted to acknowledge somebody that’s here today: James Shaw Jr.,” Boseman said in his speech. Shaw was completely surprised and humbled by Boseman’s accolades.
