Oscars 2020: Interview – ‘Marriage Story’ director Noah Baumbach on Writing Movies and Working with Adam Driver

Noah Baumbach

This year’s Cinderella story is the Oscar-nominated movie “Marriage Story” written and directed by Noah Baumbach. The movie is for six-Academy Awards, Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress for Laura Dern, Best Actor for Adam Driver, Best Actress for Scarlett Johannsson and Best Original Score for Randy Newman.

Baumbach wrote the screenplay as a love letter that tells a love story in reverse.  The director is nominated for two Academy Awards, for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.

The movie stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. Laura Dern, Alan Alda, and Ray Liotta.Says Baumbach of the project, “Sometimes, it’s only when something breaks down that you understand it for the first time. And so it was through the narrative structure of a divorce that I was able to tell the story of a marriage. The legal system of divorce is set up to divide, necessarily. It divides people, family, property and time. It keeps everyone in their own story and obfuscates the other person’s point of view. But I wanted to construct another way of looking at it, a more generous offering. I wanted to find the love story in the breakdown. Marriage, of course, also continues in divorce — you’re married the whole time you’re doing it. And when a kid is involved, marriage continues, in a sense, after the divorce as well.”

TVMusic Network caught up with Baumbach where he talked about his work on the movie and his writing process. Check it out above.

“Marriage Story” is now streaming on Netflix. The Academy Awards air live on Sunday, February 9 on ABC.
