In Chris Rock’s “Misty Green,” the Hollywood dream is right around the corner but for Misty Green, played brilliantly by Rosalind Eleazar, it keeps moving further and further away.  For the former Emmy-winner, she finds herself in a bind. She gets evicted from her rent-free apartment from the widow of her sugar daddy. She’s given a week to find someplace to live.

Another challenge for Misty is the men in her life. Randy, played by Topher Grace, Misty’s long suffering agent, tries unsuccessfully to get her a gig on a remake of “Dreamgirls.” In the meantime she hits the cattle calls. She reunites with director Jordan Green, played by Chris Rock, who she’s worked with before, gaining the difficult reputation. He wants her for “Dreamgirls,” put isn’t sure if he can trust her.

Zach, played by Adam Driver, Misty’s on-again-off-again hook up, for casual sex and drugs, offers her a way out of her financial troubles for a price, one night in Dubai to service a shady prince. Something she is adamant she will not do.

This comes at the same time that she is trying to help her brother Jay, played by Daniel Kaluuya, whose bipolar disorder has led him to multiple run-ins with the law.

But the biggest challenge is Misty herself, who can’t seem to get out of her own way. She’s a hot mess. As she says in the film, “I wake up when I want to wake up, sleep when I want to, get high when I want to.” She parties when she should be preparing for auditions, yet somehow feels entitled to pass them. Despite her self-destructive behavior, you still want her to succeed. She’s the ultimate diva, but one who desperately needs to turn her life around. Misty also has vulnerabilities. One particularly humiliating moment comes when she’s in the emergency room after an accident and, at her lowest point, a doctor asks her for a selfie. How will things turn out for her by the end of the week?

What was Great

Rosalind’s performance who is a great scene partner and shines in all her scenes. She should definitely be in awards conversations.

The triangle of sorts with Jordan, Misty, and Zach plays well. Zach and Misty are extremely entertaining thanks to the chemistry of Eleazar and Driver.

The A list cast was incredible, plus it was great to Kaluuya on screen again.

Although too brutal and sinical at times, the it was great to see a movie about Hollywood.

Rosalind’s performances of Radiohead’s “Creep” and “One Night Only” from Dreamgirls are incredible.

Rosalind’s performance is so good, it deserves a another mention

What could be better

Some of the timelines are confusing, it bites off more than it could chew. Racism, Sexism, Homelessness, Mental Health, Drug abuse…what didn’t it tackle? Lees would have been more.

With so much going on in the movie it was hard to catch your breath and process what was going on before it jumps to tackle another topic.

The script is a jumbled and could have used a least one more edit before shooting. Not everything needs to be linear but a little clarity

Chris Rock’s performance of Jordin felt like his stage act, so it seems like he was playing himself.
