2017 will be a Valentine’s Day week that “Days of our Lives” fans will forever remember when Steve and Kayla tie the knot in front of family and friends. Actors Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evens have played the on-again, off-again couple on the show for thirty years.

One of the most popular couples of all time, Stephen (Patch) Johnson and Kayla Brady’s love story on “Days of Our Lives, helped coin the phrase “super couple.”

On Wednesday, February 15th, Steve and Kayla will once again say “I Do.”

TVMusic Network spoke with Nichols and Evans to get the details of the special day.

Check out the interview below:

Phyllis: It was nice that your characters found their way back to each other. Can you talk about that journey?

Mary Beth Evans: It was a journey.

Stephen Nichols: We’re happy that it was a journey, that it didn’t happen overnight. Mary Beth and I always talk about this, how we thought it was very well done the way they wrote our on-again off-again relationship up until the point where we finally commit and say, ‘yeah I think I can do it.’

Mary Beth Evans:
Yeah.  We were lucky that the writers, on one hand, they kept us apart which seemed like “hey, come on.” But on the other hand, it was so great because we got to do so many heartfelt, in-depth scenes which I thought were great. And they were pretty realistic. I bought it. I bought it that she couldn’t go there because she worked so hard to keep her life orderly… and make something happen for herself. Steve’s got a lot of danger that’s unknown to her organized life. I really thought it was written well, that they did it like that and that they took the time that they did.

Phyllis: Now this is the third time…

MaryBeth Evans: I barely remember the second. I don’t know about the second one. I don’t even remember what the circumstances were.

Stephen Nichols:
 I think it’s because I had been married to…

Mary Beth Evans: Marina?

Stephen Nichols:
Marina…so the first marriage was null and void. You know that’s a good excuse to have another wedding.

MaryBeth Evans: I don’t really remember it like I do the first one.

Stephen Nichols: I don’t remember one thing about it except that somebody asked me to shave my goatee and I wouldn’t do it. I was on my way off the show at that point.

Phyllis: What, if anything, feels different about this time for them?

Mary Beth Evans: I think there’s something really special about a long-term relationship and knowing each other for a so long, for a really long time. That why it so special. They let us just evolve and be these evolved people. We didn’t try to recreate the original love story. That it was…these people were sort of seasoned together and have this history together, I thnk was really special and then you get to this wedding and it’s all that. Their kids are there, the family’s there and there’s so many levels, this rich history, so much that I found it very moving personally.

Stephen Nichols:
Yes, it was moving. It is much less about the place or surroundings. Mary Beth and I were just so focused on each other and remembering who Patch and Kayla are to each other.

Mary Beth Evans: Yeah, we are fans of these characters too. We are committed to these characters. And we always want to be true to them. It was nice at this point to have that wedding like that.

Phyllis: What can you share about the ceremony itself?

Stephen Nichols: It was simple.

Mary Beth Evans: It was very intimate. It was really nice.

Stephen Nichols:
Everyone was standing. They were surrounding us. The way they shot it, everyone was basically in a circle around us. We could see all this love around us as we were professing our love to one another. it was actually…it was moving not only for the characters but for us. You could really feel the love in this one. It was very sweet.

Phyllis: Mary Beth, can you talk about Kayla’s dress?

Mary Beth Evans: [Our costume designer] Richard Bloore here is just amazing. He just knows what fits and works for each one of the characters on the show.  I honestly don’t know how he does it. He doesn’t have an assistant shop or anything. He picks everything for everybody. That’s what he bought and I love love love it. In fact, I’m checking to see how I can dye the lace so that I can make it another dress. It was just so darn cute.

Stephen Nichols:
It was really beautiful.

Mary Beth Evans:
It was fun, elegant and current.

Stephen Nichols: You didn’t ask me about my dress.

Mary Beth Evans: He had on a beautiful suit. He looked super handsome.

Phyllis: So, Patch and Kayla are a super couple and you are back together. How do you think the fans will feel about it? It’s something they have been wanting.

Stephen Nichols: Oh they will be moved.

MaryBeth Evans: They will be very excited.

Stephen Nichols: I think they also love the journey as much as we did and now that it’s a combination to actually having a wedding. I think they are very happy.

Mary Beth Evans: – It’s unusual…it’s interesting that Stephen and I, in our real lives, have been married for 30, 31- 32 years to our spouses and that this couple here, 30 years later, is renewing their vows. It’s pretty crazy and incredible and where does that ever happen? And they still like each other.
