The 77th Annual Tony Awards were held at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City on Sunday, June 16 (8:00-11:00 PM, LIVE ET/5:00-8:00 PM, LIVE PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+.
“Stereophonic,” about a band on the verge of stardom recording an album, took home 5 Tony Awards including Best Play; “The Outsiders,” based on the S.E. Hinton novel of the same name, won 4 awards including Best Musical with producer Angelina Jolie taking home her first Tony.
“Merrily We Roll Along” took home the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical and wins for its stars Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe, a total of 4 awards. Alicia Keys’ autobiographical musical “Hell’s Kitchen” took home two acting awards for leads Kecia Lewis-Evans and Maleah Joi Moon.
The real winners of the night were the performances from the show, which were some of the best in recent years. including musical tributes to the late Chita Rivera, memoriam sung by Nicole Scherzinger. Performance highlights included the show’s opening number with Alicia Keys and special guest Jay-Z performing “Empire State of Mind” with the cast; Pete Townshend performing “Pinball Wizard” with the cast of “The Who’s Tommy” and showstopping performances from “Water for Elephants,” and “The Outsiders.”
